Installing a stone range hood in your kitchen is a great way to create an interesting focal point or adding to the overall look of the space. With limitless styles and designs of range hoods in the market, it is quite helpful to know some basics so that you can choose the right range hood.

The first thing that you need to remember that the main role of the range hood is as a functional kitchen appliance. So, before you pick a model, here are a few things that you need to consider:

1. Diameter of the ductwork of the exhaust system
The diameter of the ductwork should be in accordance to the overall installation needs of your kitchen. Usually, the diameter is around 4 inches, which means that this is the ideal measurement for typical installation works. However, depending on your kitchen, the diameter can be slightly lesser than the recommended 4 inches.

2. Length of the ductwork
Another important thing that you need to consider when choosing a stone range hood is the length of the ductwork. The length of the ductwork significantly determines how effective the installation will be in getting rid of gases and smoke from your kitchen. Shorter ductwork is usually better and more effective.

3. The layout of your kitchen
It is the layout of your kitchen that will determine how much space you have to install the range hood or how you can fit the range hood in the available space. Generally, range hoods are mounted 24-30 inches above the cook top. However, you must always follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for best results. Depending on their configuration, you can mount range hoods on walls, below cabinets or even suspend them above your island cook top.

4. Power of the fan
The size and layout of your kitchen will further determine how powerful the fan in the hood needs to be in order to be able to get rid of smoke and odor. A range hood's performance is measured in cubic feet per minute (CFM). The higher the CFM, the more air the range hood can remove in one minute of operation. Your CFM needs will also depend on the size and type of your cook top. For instance, a gas range will require more CFM than an electric cook top.

5. Noise level
According to kitchen designer Barbra Bright, range hoods are like dishwashers. Some are quiet while some are extremely noisy. The noise level of range hoods are measured in stones, which is an unit of loudness as perceived by a person with normal hearing. High powered hoods usually have a higher stone rating. The best way to ascertain the noise level is by testing it out in the showroom. One way that you can reduce the noise as much as by almost 40% is by mounting the fan itself outside your home, either on the roof or the side, so that it’s not right inside the hood shell.

Keeping these aspects in mind will help you choose the right stone range hood and install it in the most effective manner.
